ON THIS DAY
On June 11, 1962, the infamous Alcatraz escape took place. Three inmates, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, executed a daring and complex escape from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, the maximum-security prison located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. They crafted a raft out of raincoats and other materials and used dummy heads to fool the guards into thinking they were asleep in their beds. Despite an extensive investigation and search, the escapees were never found, and their fate remains a mystery, making it one of the most famous prison breaks in history.
